Use of SOME:

1. In sentences you expect a positive answer and with demands

 I bought some very nice postcards. 

Give me some orange juice, please.


2. In polite questions or requests or if we expect the answer "YES".

 Would you like some more coffee? 

Do we have some time to go to the cinema?


Use of ANY:

1. In questions: Have you got any blue shoes?

2. In negations: No, I haven't got any.

3. In conditional clauses: If I had any, I would wear them.

4. We use any with never, without and hardly: They hardly do any homework.


1. I'm going to buy Some eggs.

2. They didn't make Any mistakes.

3. I can't pay. I haven't got Any money.

4. There aren't Any shops in this part of the town.

5. George and Alice haven't got Any children.

6. Have you got Any brothers or sisters?

7. There are Some beautiful flowers in the garden.

8. Are there Any letters for me?

9. I haven't got Any stamps, but Ann has got Some.

10. Do you know Any good hotels in London?


1. I can't buy you a drink. I haven't got any money.

Use somebody / someone, something, somewhere with a + verb 

when you don't say exactly who, what, or where. 


• Use anybody / anyone, anything, anywhere in questions or with 

a negative (-) verb. 

I didn't do anything last night. NOT I didn't do nothing


• Use nobody / no one, nothing, nowhere in short answers or in 

sentences with a positive (+) verb.

( you cannot use a 'double negative' in English.)

 

2 using anybody / anything / anywhere in one word 

answers to convey a negative meaning.

 Who did you see? Anybody. 


• To talk about people there are two alternative 

forms: somebody / someone. 

They are identical in meaning! 


something (like some) is also used in questions to make an offer or request

 Would you like something to drink? 

Could you go somewhere for me this afternoon? 


Nobody knows where he goes. 

 Somebody's coming to lunch.

 I've done nothing since Sunday.
